Family Demands Answers After Expectant Father Dies Following Police Custody in Bhutan
A 33-year-old man from Bhutan, soon to become a father, has died under troubling and unexplained circumstances after being taken into police custody. The family is calling for a full and transparent investigation, citing major inconsistencies in the police account and unanswered questions surrounding his treatment.
According to the family, police arrived at the couple’s home on 12 November to question him after another suspect implicated him in a drug-related case. Despite finding no evidence during the home search, officers took him into custody, asking his wife—who is eight months pregnant—not to inform relatives and assuring her he would likely be released soon.
The following day, the wife struggled to locate him, receiving conflicting information until later that evening when she was briefly allowed to see him in a police cell.
On 14 November, she was informed that her husband had been taken to the hospital. When she arrived, he was in critical condition with a severe head injury. Police claimed he attempted to escape from a moving van and fell, despite being handcuffed. The family disputes this explanation, pointing to inconsistencies about how he was restrained, the absence of CCTV footage, and visible swelling only on one side of his head.
Doctors performed emergency surgery for a brain bleed and later declared him brain-dead. He died on 23 November at 2:00 pm.
The family has demanded clarity on why he was detained without evidence, why they were given contradictory explanations, and why timely medical information was not provided. They are also appealing for the release of forensic findings to determine what truly happened during his custody.
The Royal Bhutan Police has stated that an investigation is underway to “establish the facts,” but the grieving family continues to seek justice and accountability for the loss of the young father-to-be.
